Akamuti African Black Soap

This soap is made from organically grown virgin, fairly traded shea butter and wild crafted coconut oil, cocoa pods.

Please note the soap was previously made from shea butter and palm oil, but due to supply problems an alternative was temporarily arranged.  A new co-operative has now been found and we will revert to the original ingredients once new stock is in this country.

The lye that is used in the saponification process is made from the ash of dried banana leaves and the bark from local Agow trees (harvested sustainably). The soap has a light scent and produces a mild creamy lather.

This soap is so mild it is the only soap local African mothers use on their babies as it is not drying. There are no added chemicals, no preservatives, no added colours or fragrances.

The colour of the soap is due to the saponification process. This soap can also be used as a shampoo, and leaves skin soft and smooth. In Togo this soap is traditionally used to relieve rashes, eczema, ringworm, measles, acne and psoriasis and as a shampoo for itchy scalps.

The soap comes in a 130g piece and it is recommended that you cut a slice from the bar to use a bit at a time. The shea butter in this soap is wild crafted,  and fairly traded from a women s co-operative in Africa.
